Dressage not just for the wealthy
When the air gets cold and the ground hardens, that's when Maryal Barnett's schedule is full. The dressage judge spends every weekend away from her Michigan home this time of year, and recently weathered the Northeast blizzard in an indoor horse ring at Centerline Stables in Ossining giving lessons as snow swirled outside the windows. "The appeal is, it's a little more of a mental sport," Barnett said. "You're asking the horse to respond to a lot of different aids." In dressage, a rider directs a horse to move in a very precise manner. Figure eights are just the beginning; try getting a horse to sidestep in a circle while always facing the center. It was easy to see why Barnett's skills were in demand. Her resume is as impressive as you can find in the sport, and she is quick and personable. Lisa Pierson, Centerline's head trainer, rode a stallion named Gallant and her session with Barnett was more conversation than instruction...
