Equestrian artistry, Dressage elevates horse and rider into athletic, graceful dance

The mare is dancing, says the unseen commentator. Music plays as an athletic, graceful grey mare trots in place, knees lifted impossibly high, and then quickens her pace with the beat of the music, appearing to skip down the centre of the arena.
This YouTube film clip of Andreas Helgstrand riding the nine-year-old Blue Hors Matinee in the Freestyle Dressage event at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, has attracted a lot of attention. Non-horsey friends alerted me to the clip, e-mailing me with the comment, "I didn't know that a horse could do that!"
I joined a list of more than four million people who had viewed this performance -- it took my breath away. While it is tempting to believe that the horse is simply responding to the rhythm of the music, in fact, that stunning performance was highly choreographed, and was the culmination of years of training for both horse and rider to reach a partnership of such complete harmony.
