New Treatment for Tendon and Ligament Injuries
A medical device derived from the lining of urinary bladders of specially bred pigs shows promise for healing equine tendon and ligament injuries, according to Rick Mitchell, DVM, of Fairfield Equine Associates in Newtown, Conn. Mitchell recently addressed a group of veterinarians at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash., about the technology and his positive experiences with it in his practice. Urinary bladder matrix (UBM), sold under the name ACell Vet, is a naturally occurring extracellular matrix scaffolding that promotes remodeling of damaged or injured tissue. It does this by recruiting cells for tissue differentiation from the circulatory system and local tissues (click here for more on ACell Vet and its use on catastrophic wounds). It’s typically distributed as a thin, dehydrated or hydrated membrane. ACell scientists approached Mitchell and other veterinarians to determine if there might be an application of the UBM technology for equine ligament and tendon injuries. Since tendon and ligament tissue structures are dense, it was thought that powdered UBM material in suspension could be injected into these structures without seeping out of them. Mitchell’s clinic treats predominantly jumpers and some dressage horses, and he has been using the UBM treatments for about 1? years. He explained, “The positions (these horses) get themselves in performing dressage and landing awkwardly off a wide jump can certainly (put them) in some rather stressful positions with a full weight bearing of a 1,200-1,500-pound frame on one limb, and so the opportunity for injury there is great.”

NMDA January Newsletter
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and is getting their horses in shape for the coming season of shows and other activities. I attended the 2003 USDF National Convention in Dallas last month as NMDA's President and as a Region 5 delegate. My column this month will be devoted exclusive to the highlights of the convention. If you are interested in more details about the convention, call or e-mail me, and I will be happy to share my observations in greater detail. While the convention began December 1 and concluded with the National Symposium on December 7, I attended from Dec. 3, 4 and 5 (needing to be back in Albuquerque the evening of December 5 to preside at our awards banquet). The majority of my time was spent in the Board of Governors' meeting, as a voting delegate for Region 5. What I discovered during this extended meeting (all day Dec. 4 and 1⁄2 of Dec. 5) is that USDF is a truly representative democracy. The Board of Governors (BOG) is composed entirely of elected delegates from the nine regions of USDF, and all business matters of USDF come to the board of governors for discussion and voting. Any delegate may speak, and all vote on each item...

Mechelen 28th December 2003
CDI-W Mechelen 26-30th December 2003
... In today's qualifying grand prix, places were won and the grid positions decided for tomorrow's freestyle to music, where the big business of accumulating ranking points towards a place in the FEI World Cup Final (Dusseldorf April 1-4) commences. Five-time World Cup winner and reigning Olympic champion Anky van Grunsven swept to a clear victory with Gestion Salinero in the qualifying grand prix today, with stable mate Edward Gal in second place with Gestion Lingh and in third, Antoinette Falandt, who scored the highest for Holland at the European Championships, riding Jarwo. So far the German competitors, punctuated by young British rider Emma Hindle's assault, which has put her second so far, have dominated the rankings.

Are you liable if your dog runs free on your property?
dogPlaintiff Goodman was an exercise rider on a thoroughbred training facility.? She was seriously injured when the horse she was riding was spooked by actions of the defendant Hartigan?s dog.? She recovered worker?s compensation from Cashel, the owner of the facility. She then brought this lawsuit against Hartigan, the trainer, claiming that his conduct in permitting his pet dog to run free on the property was negligence and the cause of her injury.? Defendant claimed that the dog was part of the horse-training business?to desensitize the horses to dogs.? Plaintiff claimed the dog was merely the personal pet of the defendant.? The trial court granted summary judgment for the defendant, but in this opinion the Court of Appeals disagrees with that decision and sends the case back for trial.? If the dog was used only in business, then the previous worker?s compensation award would have covered the subject matter of this lawsuit and plaintiff would not be entitled to sue. If, however, the dog was merely a personal pet, then the worker?s compensation award would not prevent this lawsuit.? Whether the dog was a pet or a part of the training program is a question of fact for trial.

Gestion ends Sponsorship of Gestion Dressage Team and Anky
Gestion Stock Brokers have announced to end their sponsorship of Anky van Grunsven and the Gestion Dressage Team. Gestion CEO Ad Strating has decided not to renew the contract after the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Gestion was not only head sponsor of Anky van Grunsven, but also financially supported Arjen Teeuwissen, Ellen Bontje and Imke Bartels. Furthermore, Gestion invested money in new dressage horses. However, after eight years of being the pumping financial heart of the Dutch dressage sport, they call it quit.

end of the year Astrology report for your horse
Capricorn (December 22 – January 20). You can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, although the many current demands on your time and energy mean that you have little time to pause and catch your breath. NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL CHALLENGE ACCUMULATORS TO DECEMBER 2003

With results from 15 qualifying shows now recorded, the National Dressage Challenge Accumulators have reached an exciting stage. The newly imported Holsteiner stallion Landioso has a clear lead in the Equine Herbals Grand Prix. Ridden by Raglan's Jody Hartstone, he has amassed 19pts from three starts ahead of Bill Noble's Vincent St James and Kallista Field's Julius each with one win from one start on the circuit. Fresh from her disappointment of withdrawing Julius from Olympic contention, Kallista has bounced right back into lead in the Vetpro Advanced section on another talented young Jaguar horse, Jasper. The pair have recorded three wins and a second from four starts and hold a six point lead from World Challenge Advanced winner, Franzi van Bruggen and the imported Swiss horse Cavour.

USDF Announces Regional Director and Council and Committee Chair Positions

USDF Announces Regional Director and Council and Committee Chair Positions

training at Windsong Dressage and Equestrian CenterThe United States Dressage Federation (USDF) annual convention is an important time for USDF members to help shape the future of the organization and the sport of dressage in America. The USDF Board of Governors (BOG) and all regions, councils, and committees held open meetings throughout the week of December 2-7, 2003, at the convention in Dallas, TX. These meetings enabled USDF members to help make important decisions affecting the organization, express their opinions, and catch up on developments in the dressage world and the USDF. During the 2003 BOG meeting, delegates elected directors of the even-numbered USDF regions to serve three-year terms that will begin January 1, 2004. Incumbent regional directors Sue Hughes (MI), Linda Landers (MO), and Fern Feldman (CT) ran unopposed and were elected by acclamation as directors of Regions 2, 4, and 8, respectively. Incumbent Gaye McCabe (OR) and Peter Rothschild (WA) sought the Region 6 director position, with McCabe winning the election.

World's Oldest Art Uncovered in Germany includes sculpture of horse

World's Oldest Art Uncovered in Germany includes sculpture of horse

Archeologists working on a dig in the southern German province of Swabia have unearthed what they claim to be the oldest statue in the history of art. The three little figurines carved from mammoth bone were discovered in a cave in Southern Germany, and are so intricate in their design that archeologists believe they could change our understanding of the imaginative power of early man's mind. The artifacts date back between 30,000 and 33,000 years, to a time when some of modern humans' earliest relatives populated the European continent ... the figures depicting a lion-man, a water bird and a horse are the oldest examples of human art ever found.

NZ qualifies for Olympic dressage competition

NZ qualifies for Olympic dressage competition

directionsNew Zealand has been confirmed as having won a dressage place in next year's Athens Olympics, Dressage New Zealand said today. Confirmation came from the international body for equestrian sport, FEI.
In October, Clevedon's Louisa Hill and her mount, Gabana, were the top-scoring local combination at New Zealand's qualifying event in Auckland. However, Hill had an anxious wait to see if her mark of 66.25 per cent was enough to get her country a place in Athens out of group G. India withdrew from the group, leaving China's Lina Lui as the only rider to challenge Hill. Lui competed at an event in Stuttgart, in Germany, but was reported to have been given a mark of 46.8 per cent by the same judge who had assessed Hill.

FEI WORLD CUP DRESSAGE,CDI-W Maastricht, Netherlands, 11-14th December 2003

Germany's Heike Kemmer cemented her lead in the FEI World Cup Western European dressage league table with a close fought victory in Maastricht. Less than one point separated Kemmer and Bonaparte, a now nine-year-old Hannoverian gelding found by her father Joachim as a foal, from local heroine Anky van Grunsven riding Gestion Salinero. This was the Olympic champion van Grunsven's first international grand prix competition in a year where most of her time has been spent recovering from a serious thigh fracture sustained in a training accident at home. With Isabell Werth, Kemmer's team mate on the gold-medal winning German European squad, in third place on her young talent Satchmo, the top three riders performed at a very high level on exciting young horses.
