Top dollars reign at show horse auction
When people come to see Jeff Marsh about a horse, his Virginia twang ricochets across the audience with the speed of a Big Apple accent direct from Times Square. The veteran auctioneer called the shots Sunday at The Ridge Farm, where more than 100 people turned out and bid five- and six-figure prices for quality show horses. Marsh's lively banter set a dizzying pace, as a deft nod here or a subtle wave there spurred each horse's stock to rise steadily in value. Such auctions for horses in the jumper, hunter and dressage disciplines are common in Europe, but occur less frequently in the states...

Infection is my big bugbear
After the excitement and thrills of winning the two big Christmas chases at Kempton and Leopardstown, with Edredon Bleu and Best Mate, our spirits have been further raised by a couple of excellent January weekends which produced doubles for our yard on consecutive Saturdays. Yet despite these victories, it has been business as usual at West Lockinge Farm and there have been several surprise reversals with some of the promising younger horses.

Wanted: A Few Good Clippers (of equestrian land use articles)
The Equestrian Land Conservation Resource is looking for clippers--people who are concerned about the loss of equestrian land and riding areas and want to do something about it. These clippers clip newspaper and magazine articles, not shaggy horses, and send them in to the Equestrian Land Conservation Resource's (ELCR) national office. The articles assist the ELCR in developing a national perspective responsive to the diverse local issues and conditions affecting equestrian access to trails, open space, and land use. This knowledge enables the ELCR to link concerned individuals with others in their region or elsewhere who are working on similar issues...

What's in a name? simplicity. The end of AHSA, USEF and USET
U.S. Equestrian, that's the new name of the United States' main organization for equestrian sports. For many people, it has been a bit confusing to understand the various names of the competing organizations, over the past year, so I'll try to untangle the name game. The American Horse Shows Association (AHSA) exists no longer; nor does the United States Equestrian Team (USET), which was also called the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) or the National Governing Body (NGB). They have been merged to form U.S. Equestrian...

Cruelty, neglect hurt more horses than West Nile does

This is a community and a country that loves horses, so why do we tolerate cruelty to them?In the state's largest case to date, 45 starving horses in Pine County were seized from their owner in November 2002. And recently, 16 horses in Todd County were rescued (seven more had died).   I thank God, because we are full here," said Drew Fitzpatrick, head of the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation ...

Las Vegas seeking a winning pair for World Cup
The profile of horse sports in this country could take a great leap forward with the first-ever combined finals of World Cup show jumping and dressage next year in Las Vegas. The board of Las Vegas Events, which presented the World Cup show jumping finals in 2000 and 2003, approved the concept, which still needs the formality of a final nod from the FEI (international equestrian federation.) But since the idea has the support of FEI Dressage Committee Chairman Mariette Withages, among others, Las Vegas Events President Pat Christenson is expecting to make an official announcement soon, and would like tickets to go on sale in April, a year before the event. "What's most attractive to me is the marketing component. We like being able to market it as the world's top equestrian sports festival," said Christenson, who envisions the advertising slogan as, "Come watch America compete against the world. Debbie McDonald will be our icon for that," he added, referring to the 2003 Dressage World Cup champion.
