Prix St. George win for Ulla Hudson and Rising Sun
In appalling conditions of snow and wind and "hard footing", Ulla rode Rising Sun to a first prize win at Prix St. George. The Dances with Horses Show at the New Mexico Fairgrounds was held on February 28-29 and was Rising Sun's first appearance at FEI competition. Her win confirmed the opinions of many that this was a mare with great potential. On Saturday she proved it and returned Ulla to the show ring in winning form.

Putting more fun into the Olympic sport of dressage
Teresa Trull traces a more than 30-year singing career to a lucky break at a high school talent show. She relates 15 years as a cutting-edge dressage artist to accidentally making a shy little boy laugh. A lifetime's supply of oddly meshed successes, she said, is rooted in well-timed run-ins with good people and the ability to make leaps of faith. "You need to be brave enough to be happy," she said. Trull, 49, has recorded six rhythm and blues albums, toured with Huey Lewis and Sheila E. and worked in recording studios with Joan Baez and Bonnie Raitt. She has sung all over the world, traveling from Puerto Rico to Egypt, Costa Rica to Greece.

Dressage competitor injured
Equestrian competitor injured. A Canadian rider was hospitalized Sunday after she fell while practicing for a dressage competition in Wellington. Simone Williams of Ontario fell at the Palm Beach Equestrian Club, said Mason Phelps, club spokesman. Williams, who is in her 30s, was preparing to compete at the Winter Equestrian Festival.
"She was on a young horse that just lost it in the warm-up situation," said Shannon Dueck, who attended the festival Sunday and has competed with Williams. Luckily, she was wearing a hard hat, Dueck said. "She always does.

The penultimate qualifying round of the FEI World Cup Dressage Western
European League takes place at Neumunster, Germany this weekend, where
fans are due another top quality 'dressage feast'. As expected, entries are dominated by a strong German contingent. Heike Kemmer can sit this one out as she is still sitting pretty at the top of the points standings after two wins, one second and a third place this
season. Berlin winner Hubertus Schmidt, former title winner Isabell Werth and Ann-Kathrin Linsenhof are all out to increase their hold, as only two more German riders will be able to compete at the Duesseldorf final (a maximum of three per nation are eligible)...

Equestrian semis burr under saddle to neighborhood
If you asked Rick Hill for directions to his neighborhood, the simplest explanation might be: Take South Shore Boulevard until you get to the truck stop and turn there. The big 18-wheelers are not only ugly to look at but also create traffic jams on Sheffield -- the only road in and out of the community of about 60 homes, Hill said."They're moving semi trucks in there day and night, and it's getting to be a real nuisance," Hill said. "It's just a pile of trailers there.... No other neighborhood in Wellington has to put up with this." The trailers arrived with the start of the nearby Winter Equestrian Festival early last month and are used to haul hay and other supplies for the massive, eight-week series of upscale horse shows...

Hearing today for horse show announcer arrested on probation violation after officers find crack cocaine in Wellington home. A longtime horse show announcer who runs of one of the premier equestrian Web sites was arrested Tuesday night at his Wellington home on a probation violation for a 1994 lewd assault conviction. Kenneth L. Kraus, 53, of 12705 Westhampton Circle, was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail after law enforcement officials found a suspected crack cocaine pipe and more than 20 crack cocaine rocks in his closet, said Sgt. UCD vets to aid horses in their fourth Olympic Games
Working with world-renowned equestrians is standard for Drs. Jack Snyder and Sharon Spier, both of UC Davis, who will use their veterinary expertise at the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece this summer. As large animal veterinarians, the two will head the Olympic equine referral hospital alongside an international team. Help will be available in the form of a full, on-site hospital prepared to treat between 250 and 300 horses. The services will benefit both smaller countries, which are unable to send their own veterinary representatives, and larger countries that can but need additional support. The horses will participate in three main events: jumping, dressage and three-day eventing - dressage, cross-country jumps and stadium jumps...

The problems continue for Ulla Salzgeber
The problems continue for the world's number one-rated dressage rider, who just was penalized with a two-month suspension from the German Equestrian Federation because her gelding, Rusty, tested positive for testosterone in last year's World Cup finals. ...Even worse for Salzgeber, the German Olympic Committee could bar her from the Athens Games, at which the Germans are favored to continue their reign in dressage, because athletes who have a doping offense on their record are not supposed to compete in championships.

Could McIsaac be Oregon's first Olympic athlete?
Megan McIsaac loves horsing around. So much so, she 's thinking of making an Olympic sport out of it.
For over 10 years, McIsaac has trained and competed in the sport of dressage, a systematic and harmonious way of training horses, physically and mentally. Next month, she?ll take another step toward fulfilling her Olympic dream when she travels to New Zealand. McIsaac is the first Wisconsinite ever selected for the Horse of the Year Competition, which draws competitors from five countries. "It's very exciting, it?s a great honor and it's a lot of pressure,"McIsaac said of her first international competition, to be held March 17-21. "My goal for this event is just to go, relax and have fun." McIsaac sets goals before every meet, and not necessarily to win. She gets very nervous before competitions because she wants to do well. When McIsaac thinks of succeeding, she makes mistakes.

Farewell - Ed Rodgers
Our dear friend Ed Rodgers received a fine farewell from a large gathering of Family and friends at St Johns Church, Upper Beaconsfield, on Wednesday the 11th of February.   As the church was only 1 kilometer from Ed’s property, "Mungeribar", his faithful horse "Precious" was plaited and ridden beautifully by Bianca Barnes with the cortège. They were joined by Ed’s partner Peter and brother Rudi as well as four FEI riders in full turnout. Ed would have loved the pathos of the scene, as they arrived at the church with mist rolling through the tops of the mountain as

Horse sense from equestrian set
If you are a Horse Person -- the kind who has spent every spare minute since childhood in an endless cycle of grooming, tacking, riding, untacking, hosing down, feeding, mucking -- you know there are certain Truths About Horses. You know, for example, that your horse is no dummy. He expands his stomach when you buckle his saddle so you'll buckle it looser. He nuzzles you when you're sad, and snatches carrots out of your pockets when you turn your back. You might even consider him smarter than many of your human companions. Take FBW Kennedy, champion dressage horse ridden to victory Saturday by five-time Olympian Robert Dover at the Winter Equestrian Festival Grand Prix in Wellington.

Was 2003 A Harbinger Of Even Bigger Things To Come In 2004?
I never know where to start with these year-end reviews, and 2003 is especially hard because the dressage action never stopped. The focus from an international point of view was on the Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic. The competition was intense, with hundreds of horses nationwide vying for the four spots on the team, and we came home with the gold medal, just barely beating our Canadian neighbors. The “dark horse” at the trials in Gladstone, N.J., was Kantor, with Kristina Harrison-Naness on board. They swept the trials and the USET Intermediaire I Championships and rather upset the apple cart. Another surprise was the stellar performance of Pierre St. Jacques and Lucky Tiger, not because the horse and rider do not lack talent and promise, but because it all bloomed so soon.Jan Ebeling was no big surprise as a team hopeful, except that he had two horses to choose from, and with the help of his coach, Harry Boldt, he decided on the less experienced but more brilliant Feliciano, which proved to be the smart move...

Islander and his horse win big
A famous speaker, Glenn Van Ekeren, once retorted about "potential: It's all in there. You've just got to work it out." This has certainly been the case for my husband, dressage trainer Robert C. Braren, who never stopped believing in his horse, his partner. Eleven years ago he bought a beautiful three week old colt, Italik. This mischievous colt turned into an opinionated youngster whose first achievement was to be the National Futurity Reserve Champion for 1995 for the American Trakehner Association. Time, patience, consistency and applied classical training principles do work, and the young gelding finally came into his own at age 9 and settled into his training. This was no surprise to Robert, who is a history scholar, and knew that many Trakehners mature later in age than other breeds of horses.
