Amphitheatre fit for the gods
Whatever you may have heard about the tardy completion of some of the Olympic stadiums in Athens, a small proportion of this year's Olympians, like British medal hope Pippa Funnell, can sleep soundly. Except for a few cosmetics the £150 million all-singing, all-dancing Olympic Equestrian Centre is complete. Not only that, much of it is up and running and in daily use.It also has the huge advantage of being out of town and nowhere near the traffic-clogged capital. To a certain extent that alleviates the first problem that comes to mind for horses competing in a Mediterranean Olympiad - the searing heat of a city in summer. The site at Merenda is on average five degrees cooler than the city and, according to locals, a cooling breeze sweeps in the from the sea in August.

Avid equestrian Bo Derek campaigns to stop U.S. horsemeat exports
Bo Derek loved horses long before she galloped onto U.S. movie screens in the hit movie 10. The movie star now hopes to ride to the rescue of thousands of U.S. horses killed every year to feed European and Asian diners. Derek, best known for her roles in 10 and a 1981 remake of Tarzan, went to Congress on Tuesday to support legislation that would ban the killing of horses for gourmet dining overseas. The 47-year-old, who wrote a book about her horse hobby, was unfazed when she was briefly introduced as "Bo Dietrich," an apparent mixing of her name with the early screen star Marlene Dietrich.

The parents of a Fresno State University equestrian team member who died after falling from a horse have filed a $10 million negligence claim against the school, saying their daughter was put at risk by the school's lack of coaches or supervision. Clydesdale gives dressage a go at expo
In the elegant and competitive world of dressage, you first think of the Royal Lippizans of Vienna's Spanish Riding School. Those noble white steeds find their counterparts in the United States in glossy black Arabians, warmbloods, thoroughbreds and quarter horses precisely cantering and trotting through complex, athletic routines that are the equine equivalent of human gymnastics and ballet. That is why Linda Fullmer, appearing especially small and vulnerable in her cap and formal riding clothes, got more than a few double-takes when she led one of her giant Clydesdales into the arena at Utah Horse Expo 2004 on Saturday at the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park.

USEF’s Better Testing Yields 20 Drug-Related Cases
luphenazine isn’t something either horses or humans take to ward off influenza. In humans, it’s used as a powerful treatment for schizophrenia and such psychotic symptoms as hallucinations, delusions and hostility. And in horses some veterinarians prescribe it as a long-acting tranquilizer. And in the last year fluphenazine, and reserpine (another more common, long- acting tranquilizer), have gotten a whole lot of U.S. Equestrian Federation members in trouble.

Gibson Rules Out Athens
Michelle Gibson, who led the U.S. team to the bonze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics aboard Peron, has decided to discontinue in her bid for a place on the 2004 U.S. Olympic dressage team because of chronic back problems. Gibson had been working toward Athens with her stallion World Of Dreams. Gibson, 33, underwent back surgery for a ruptured disc in August 2002, but she said her back is still painful. She added that World Of Dreams, or "Indy," is "such a big mover, it made things even harder on my back.

Team effort does the hard yards for dressage
IT HAS been a long haul, but there are only three days to go before the fourth annual Margaret River Wine Region Dressage Spectacular, to be held at Gloucester Park this Saturday and Sunday. Margaret River and Districts Horsemen's Association and Pony Club has been working towards this event since October last year, headed by co-ordinators Penny Lee and Gerlinde Watson, with a sub-committee of about eight people.
Nearly every member of the club, adult and junior, has given staunch support to the project, the end result of which will see 330 dressage tests being ridden in six arenas over the weekend. Many club members take on the same tasks each year, enabling them to work with little or no supervision, and this year the club has been boosted by several new members who are enthusiastically helping out.

Fresno equestrian's death raises safety, gender equity questions
On a sunny afternoon last fall, three college freshmen saddled their horses and headed out for a ride. Shana Virginia Eriksson was in front, her pony tail bouncing beneath her black helmet. Shana, 18, had always loved horses, and now she was a member of the equestrian team at California State University at Fresno, with Olympic ambitions. The girls left the barn area and headed across a road, because their usual arena was being dragged. Passing a field, they aroused the curiosity of a herd of cows, which surged toward them. Suddenly, the horses panicked. As the other horses bolted, Shana pulled hers into a tight spin. In the next instant, the 1,200-pound animal fell on her. She died three days later.

It's time to braid for shows
WITH THE SUMMER show season right around the corner, it's time to start practicing your braiding skills to be ready for the first important show (for those whose discipline require braids)...It is easier to braid a mane that has not been freshly washed. Wash the mane a week before the show if it is very dusty. Clean manes are very slippery and hard to hold for making a tight braid...

Event doping rumours quashed
by FEI

The BEF and the FEI have strongly denied that the sport of eventing is currently experiencing a problem with horses being doped for the dressage phase. Although mere conjecture, recent reports in the press concerning the use of sedatives in the dressage phase during three-day events have provoked a response from equestrian sporting bodies and raised public awareness of the alleged problem in this Olympic year...

Horse sense. Animal behaviorists give them some credit for smarts.
If you are a Horse Person -- the kind who has spent every spare minute since childhood in an endless cycle of grooming, tacking, riding, untacking, hosing down, feeding, mucking -- you know there are certain Truths About Horses. You know, for example, that your horse is no dummy...take FBW Kennedy, champion dressage horse ridden to victory recently by five-time Olympian Robert Dover at the Winter Equestrian Festival Grand Prix in Wellington, Fla.

Calming of 'crazy horses' sets off alarm
... For the first time yesterday, a number of prominent characters in the sport were willing to discuss their concerns that illegal tranquilisers were being fed to horses to better compete in the dressage test at major competitions, potentially distorting results and the outcome of medals. The sport's world governing body, the Federation Equestre Internationale, first reacted to intelligence about the possible existence of the sedative last year by increasing the number of drug tests immediately after the dressage phase...
