USEF’s Better Testing Yields 20 Drug-Related Cases
luphenazine isn’t something either horses or humans take to ward off influenza. In humans, it’s used as a powerful treatment for schizophrenia and such psychotic symptoms as hallucinations, delusions and hostility. And in horses some veterinarians prescribe it as a long-acting tranquilizer. And in the last year fluphenazine, and reserpine (another more common, long- acting tranquilizer), have gotten a whole lot of U.S. Equestrian Federation members in trouble.

Gibson Rules Out Athens
Michelle Gibson, who led the U.S. team to the bonze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics aboard Peron, has decided to discontinue in her bid for a place on the 2004 U.S. Olympic dressage team because of chronic back problems. Gibson had been working toward Athens with her stallion World Of Dreams. Gibson, 33, underwent back surgery for a ruptured disc in August 2002, but she said her back is still painful. She added that World Of Dreams, or "Indy," is "such a big mover, it made things even harder on my back.

Team effort does the hard yards for dressage
IT HAS been a long haul, but there are only three days to go before the fourth annual Margaret River Wine Region Dressage Spectacular, to be held at Gloucester Park this Saturday and Sunday. Margaret River and Districts Horsemen's Association and Pony Club has been working towards this event since October last year, headed by co-ordinators Penny Lee and Gerlinde Watson, with a sub-committee of about eight people.
Nearly every member of the club, adult and junior, has given staunch support to the project, the end result of which will see 330 dressage tests being ridden in six arenas over the weekend. Many club members take on the same tasks each year, enabling them to work with little or no supervision, and this year the club has been boosted by several new members who are enthusiastically helping out.

Fresno equestrian's death raises safety, gender equity questions
On a sunny afternoon last fall, three college freshmen saddled their horses and headed out for a ride. Shana Virginia Eriksson was in front, her pony tail bouncing beneath her black helmet. Shana, 18, had always loved horses, and now she was a member of the equestrian team at California State University at Fresno, with Olympic ambitions. The girls left the barn area and headed across a road, because their usual arena was being dragged. Passing a field, they aroused the curiosity of a herd of cows, which surged toward them. Suddenly, the horses panicked. As the other horses bolted, Shana pulled hers into a tight spin. In the next instant, the 1,200-pound animal fell on her. She died three days later.
