12 year old may be on Olympic dressage team
Horserider Alice Thompson is dreaming of Olympic glory after being chosen for a national team at the age of just 12.
The pupil from Westfield School in Gosforth, Newcastle, was picked for the British dressage team taking on 12 other European countries after impressing selectors at the British Dressage Championships, in Solihull.
Having been riding since she was five, Alice's skills attracted the attention of British dressage coach Ian Woodhead, who is helping to train her.

Amphitheatre fit for the gods
Whatever you may have heard about the tardy completion of some of the Olympic stadiums in Athens, a small proportion of this year's Olympians, like British medal hope Pippa Funnell, can sleep soundly. Except for a few cosmetics the £150 million all-singing, all-dancing Olympic Equestrian Centre is complete. Not only that, much of it is up and running and in daily use.It also has the huge advantage of being out of town and nowhere near the traffic-clogged capital. To a certain extent that alleviates the first problem that comes to mind for horses competing in a Mediterranean Olympiad - the searing heat of a city in summer. The site at Merenda is on average five degrees cooler than the city and, according to locals, a cooling breeze sweeps in the from the sea in August.
