Getting fit the professional way

Getting fit the professional way
... where, in the past, a hack for a dressage horse consisted of the walk to the school and back, more dressage riders and show jumpers are starting to use the same basic fittening programme as the event riders.“In dressage, people focus too much on competition and not enough on building muscle and strength,” says Carl Hester. William Funnell agrees: “My approach is very similar to my wife Pippa's, especially if my horses have had a long lay-off.” Most professionals will walk their horses in week one, building from half an hour the first day, to up to one hour by the end of the week, up to two hours the following week. This is seen as critical to the long-term health and soundness of the horse../

Horse found wedged in a tree put down

Horse found wedged in a tree put down
A horse that was found wedged in a tree Wednesday had to be put down by its owner. Lark Tedesco-Finneman, who worked with fire and rescue crews to save Smokey from the tallow tree, said she paid her last respects to the 3-year-old gelding Thursday morning. “I went to where Smokey was lying and he had already been put down and was tarped, and I just lifted up the tarp and said goodbye,” she said. Lisa Bruder, owner of the horse, could not be reached for comment Thursday evening. A veterinarian at Gulf Coast Large Animal Clinic said he could not comment on Smokey’s condition without her permission. But Tedesco-Finneman, a volunteer with the horse-rescue organization Habitat for Horses, said the Smokey’s hind leg was hurt and he appeared to have “given up” on living. She said he also might have had internal injuries or nerve damage.

New mount for top German rider

Capellmann has been looking for a grand prix horse since she sold Cockney last November and lost her great partner Farbenfroh (pictured) in late December. Zancor, who took Danish rider Per Sandgaard to the Olympics, fits the bill...
