Anti-doping classes run by BEF
Primarily for those intending to compete under FEI Rules, but open to competitors from any discipline that would like to attend. The adoption of the World Anti Doping Code has increased the necessity for all competing under FEI Rules to fully understand Doping Regulations (equine and human). Ignorance is no defence and a positive test is likely to result in a ban.

Horse handedness could lead to safer bets
... whether a horse is right or left "handed" may be the key to beating the bookies' odds. Horse trainers and riders often say their animals perform better when running, turning or jumping in a particular direction. But whether these preferences were the result of training and experience or an innate, underlying penchant for one side or the other wasn't known. So Jack Murphy and his colleagues at the University of Limerick in Ireland decided to measure how 40 unschooled sport horses, destined for show jumping or dressage, performed on a series of tests. The researchers watched which leg they stepped forward with, which direction they chose to detour around an obstacle or roll over in a bed of hay.

Dressage not just for the wealthy
When the air gets cold and the ground hardens, that's when Maryal Barnett's schedule is full. The dressage judge spends every weekend away from her Michigan home this time of year, and recently weathered the Northeast blizzard in an indoor horse ring at Centerline Stables in Ossining giving lessons as snow swirled outside the windows. "The appeal is, it's a little more of a mental sport," Barnett said. "You're asking the horse to respond to a lot of different aids." In dressage, a rider directs a horse to move in a very precise manner. Figure eights are just the beginning; try getting a horse to sidestep in a circle while always facing the center. It was easy to see why Barnett's skills were in demand. Her resume is as impressive as you can find in the sport, and she is quick and personable. Lisa Pierson, Centerline's head trainer, rode a stallion named Gallant and her session with Barnett was more conversation than instruction...

Ferro-Lorenzo CH Pas de Deux at the 2005 KWPN Stallion Licensing
... enthusiasts will get a unique opportunity to see keur stallion Ferro in action in a pas de deux with his licensed son Lorenzo CH at the 2005 KWPN Stallion Licensing in 's Hertogenbosch (NED) on 4th and 5th February 2005. The pas de deux will be a harmony between two world class Grand Prix horses, choreographed to music from "The Godfather." Former Dutch Olympic dressage team horse Ferro will be presented by Susanne de Klein, while Lorenzo CH is ridden by his owner Wayne Channon, a British short listed Grand Prix rider who currently lives in Belgium. "The pair are so striking in the way they look," Channon said. "Both have a very strong piaffe-passage and great pirouettes and in looks father and son are so similar." The 'Ferro demonstration' will open with a parade of the two approved stallions, Ferro and Lorenzo CH, followed by a presentation of four Ferro mares under saddle. Then the Grand Prix pas de deux will be the highlight of the Ferro demo at the licensing...

The Horse Massager: Bringing balance to horse, rider
Last August, when Cristie Thomas of Aptos got her 10-year-old horse, Sally, and started to ride her a lot, she noticed Sally was moving funny at higher gaits and was having a terrible time moving to the right. Suspecting the problem was physical rather than behavioral, Thomas called Jackie Iddings, a certified massage therapist specializing in myofascial release and craniosacral therapies for horse and rider. Iddings started her business, Balanced Bodywork, in April, tapping into an emerging field of therapy that treats horse and rider as an athletic team...
